The Future

I scrutinize the face of the future,

But find no trace of knowledge in his eyes,

Nothing but a blank look that stirs my thoughts.

My mind winds forward: People spring to life,

Places appear, scenes immerge—my story

Evolves into a perfect narrative

In a beautiful world where hope glistens

like dew on the grass, and victory shoots

Like rays of sun eclipsing  a  storm cloud.

I love to explore this place with its wealth

Of beauty, love, and laughter gathered from

The farthest corners of a lifetime. But

When reality calls me back from my

World of dreams, the suspense of not knowing

What will happen almost suffocates me.

So I ask the future what he’s hiding.

He holds his tongue, but his twinkling eyes say,

“Wait and see.”
