Slowly Onward

Slowly wending down the path

slowly, on a donkey.

Back and forth and jostled ‘round

toward the gates of promise.

Up toward gates as pilgrims stream

up where faithful gather,

souls of those who tend their souls,

onwards toward the temple.

Shout it out along the road, Hosannah, son of David!

Bless the One who comes to save! Hosannah in the highest!

People crowd, rip branches down, strew the dust with leaf-green.

Garments robe His conquering path, crowds speak loud His praises!

Gently rides the gentle king

odd, His choice of charger,

walking slowly straight ahead

calmed beside its fellow,

bearing Jesus toward the goal

past sons, disciples, mothers.

The servant King rides calmly on

to give His life for others.
