The Spoil of the Strong

And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots.” ~ Matthew 27:35

Greedy hands reached out

eagerly to seize

the woven fabric of the clothes

lately worn by Jesus.

Heated words, and shaken hands,

and rips of sword sharp severing

as the earthly garment

that good and noble garment

so lately dignified by him who wore it,

is rent asunder into four;

as blood-stained hands throw the die

for more.

Heavenly hands reached out

eagerly to size

the woven fabric of the world

against this Jesus.

Holy words, nail pierced hands,

the rips of whip and thorn-sharp puncturing;

this earth, this garment—

unworthy, wretched garment,

only dignified by Him who walked on it.

All is handed out— before

the blood-stained lamb who died

for her.

“Therefore I will divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong.”

~ Isaiah 53: 12
