Shadows
(shadows only)
see the infant king.
The shadow of a tired mother
head upon the lap
of a man, too tired to sleep.
The shadows of the animals
that peer in interest down
at their firs lodger–in their trough.
The shadows of the shepherds,
hot and out of breath,
that smell of sheep
and breathe in deep
and bow down low.
Shadows–leading camels
through the desert sands
that come to bring
to some new king
the wealth of gentile lands.
–
While Herod’s palace revels
in light and easy silk
and pharisees can walk with ease
and light their lamps with grease,
the shadows in the darkness
the men the lamps have missed
stand in awe
with wonder all
for they have seen their
LORD.
