Sonnet V

How patiently He waited for the hour

To give the perfect token of His love,

The pardon for our guilt, enliv’ning pow’r,

By perfect wisdom wrought from heights above.

In time the Son was born as man to dwell—

The sinless One—beneath our own sin’s curse.

He knew our pain and sorrow, felt it well,

And lived out goodness for the loved perverse,

In mercy laid Himself upon a cross

And bled to satisfy God’s just demands,

More agonizing than the pain, the loss:

To hang upon estranged, yet blameless hands.

He died the greatest of all gifts to give:

He died that we might always with Him live.

“But the Lord was pleased to crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering. He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, and the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand. As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many as He will bear their iniquities,” (Isaiah 53:10-11).
